Navigation in altspace is achieved by way of unidirectional communication beams sent from automated NavCom stations located near where the portal appears. These powerful, focused beams are pointed at any other close portal stations, and form two way communication links that allow subjectively FTL transmissions once relayed through an open portal. The carrier signal is used by ships as a navigation reference and ships simply follow the beam from one station to the next to find their way between systems. Drifting off signal is usually a death sentence for any ship without its own portal capability.

NavCom stations have absolutely massive heat radiators in order to stay in altspace indefinitely. The radiators and beacon systems make them look like gigantic origami flowers.
